North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University is a national center for research, teaching, and extension in the sciences and technologies, in the humanities and social sciences, and in a wide range of professional programs.

Founded March 7, 1887, by the North Carolina General Assembly under the provisions of the national Land-Grant Act, the University has marked more than a century of service to the state and the nation. Sharing the distinctive character of land-grant universities nationwide, NC State has broad academic offerings, national and international linkages, and large-scale outreach, extension, and research activities.


Teaching and Research

The University is organized into ten colleges, the First Year College, and the Graduate School. The colleges are Agriculture and Life Sciences, Design, Education and Psychology, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Natural Resources, Textiles, and Veterinary Medicine. NC State offers associate of applied science degrees in 9 fields of study, bachelor’s degrees in 115 fields of study, master’s degrees in 169 fields and doctoral degrees in 62 fields, as well as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Together with more than 30 research centers and institutes, these colleges and schools also support a broad spectrum of more than 1,200 scientific, technological, and scholarly research endeavors.


Outreach and Extension Programs

As the state's only research university in the land-grant tradition, NC State has the unique mission to serve the citizens of North Carolina through technical assistance, professional development, lifelong education, and technology transfer programs. The primary channel for fulfilling this mission is through the University's outreach and extension programs, centers, and institutes that make a positive contribution to the quality of life for over a million of the state's residents on an annual basis. Expertise from the various schools and colleges provides opportunities for improvements in the areas of economics and business, education and training, natural resources and environmental quality, the humanities, and food and fiber production.

The Division of Continuing Studies is an integral component of the outreach effort, offering access to the knowledge and resources of the University. During an average year, over 2,500 lifelong learners register in credit courses, both on and off campus, including those delivered via video, cable, and satellite throughout the region, the state, the nation, and the world. In addition, Summer Sessions which is administered through the colleges has an enrollment of approximately 14,000 students. 


Campus

The North Carolina State University's main campus, which is located west of North Carolina's capital of Raleigh, consist of over 100 educational buildings and over 20 housing facilities.  Adjacent to the main campus is NC State's Centennial Campus.  To promote an interactive community, Centennial Campus is host to a middle school, golf course, town center, and housing.  Other parts of campus found around Raleigh incude The College of Veterinary Medicine, university field labs and research stations, and sports facilities such as Carter-Finley Stadium and the RBC Center.  NC State's campus covers over 2,110 acres locally and across the state includes 82,000 acres for research facilites.


Research Triangle

NCSU is one of the three Research Triangle universities along with Duke University in Durham and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Within the 30-mile triangle formed by the three universities is the 6,800-acre Research Triangle Park, location of many public research agencies and private research centers of national and international corporations.
