Dr. Fernandez is the leader of the Caneberry Breeding Program. The primary focus of the caneberry program is to develop heat tolerant raspberry varieties that have a high chilling requirement. Her team has mapped heat tolerance, high chilling and primocane fruiting trait QTL’s in red raspberry. She also conducts research in sustainable strawberry production systems. Dr. Fernandez, is a partner on several federal grants focused on caneberry breeding and strawberry cultural studies. In the spring of 2014, she became leader of the strawberry breeding program. The focus of that program is to develop high quality, high yielding, disease resistant strawberries for the southern US.
