Wanted: All Ag Majors!
|
Opportunities within ag companies are on the rise.

College grads majoring in agriculture: the market is hot! While the general economy is slumping, the agricultural economy is seeing some if its best years. Why, you ask?
Agriculture controls one thing we cannot afford to lose: food. In fact, as the demand increases with the population, ag companies are putting more of their resources into making their businesses efficient, which involves bringing in the newest and the best in the job market, which is YOU!
Students graduating with the real-world experience of growing up on the farm are in even higher demand. Corporations appreciate the advanced knowledge that farm kids have acquired as well as their hard work ethic. Ag businesses also like the variety that graduates possess. Students have so many options in the agricultural industry that simply were not there five years ago. NC State has newly added majors such as Agricultural Science, Biotechnology, and Agricultural and Environmental Technology which include the newest and most innovative ideas.
Although the demand is there, students should be aware that the competition is too. Brett Bell, who recruits for Cargill AgHorizons, states, “Students who do outstanding jobs in internship environments often have a full shot at jobs, especially within the company for which they intern.” Bell also suggests that students show diversity in internships instead of working for one organization. Here are some important tips Bell suggested while being interviewed for the Progressive Farmer magazine:
-Network within the industry.
-Get involved in campus clubs that can give you access to companies.
-Do what you love within the industry.
-Make a “crisp delivery, and discuss the types of experiences the interviewee can draw upon as well as give concrete examples on how you gained that experience” in an interview.
-Maintain a good GPA of 3.0 or higher. This shows employers your performance level.
