Abstract Title : Breast Cancer Awareness: A Culturally Relevant Intervention Targeting African Americans |
|
Abstract : This study examines the utilization of a culturally relevant, health education intervention, a play entitled Stealing Clouds, targeting African American adults to enhance knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about breast cancer. A retrospective test design was used as well as a paired sample t test was conducted on a sample of four hundred and forty-eight participants . The overall sample was highly educated and majority of the respondents were female. The results showed an increase in breast cancer knowledge after the viewing of the play. The pre and post retrospective test on interest in issues related to breast cancer showed significant increase in the participants wanting to engage in further programs involving breast cancer. The results highlight that the use of a culturally relevant health education intervention may indirectly lead to better health for African Americans by using the arts. |
