Welcome to the Department of Biology at North Carolina State University.  We provide educational opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students and conduct world class research in a variety of areas in modern biology.  From studies in molecular and cellular biology to neurobiology and physiology to ecology and conservation biology, we share a passion for understanding the living world.

Formerly the Department of Zoology, we have now combined with the Biological Sciences Program to create a department with an even stronger teaching and research portfolio.  We offer undergraduate degrees in Biological Sciences and in Zoology, as well as graduate degrees in Zoology and in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences.

Consistent with the teaching, extension, and research functions of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), the Department of Biology offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, has several faculty who provide their expertise to the community through extension services, and supports over 25 faculty research programs focusing on a wide range of questions of interest in biology.

Research programs in the Department of Biology are grouped into the following areas of interest:

Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (learn more)
Endocrinology and Environmental Physiology (learn more)
Neurobiology and Behavioral Biology (learn more)
Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology (learn more)
Fisheries and Wildlife (learn more)
