Dr. Shea joined NCSU in 1993 after working for 5 years in environmental consulting at Battelle. Over the past 25 years he has been studying and educating others on the fate and effects of chemicals in the environment. He has a broad background in environmental/analytical chemistry and toxicology with primary research interests in the detection, sources, behavior, and effects of chemicals in the aquatic and terrestrial environment. His ultimate goal is to improve our ability to assess chemical exposure and thereby improve human and ecological risk assessments. His research is currently funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and several private companies, along with numerous collaborative research projects with other agencies. He has extensive surface water quality research projects in Chinaand Southeast Asia, along with significant work on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  Dr. Shea also is the Principal Investigator for the Department of Interior Southeast Climate Science Center housed at NCSU and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Program at NCSU.  Dr. Shea was Head of the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology from 2001-2006 and Head of the Department of Biology from 2006-2011. He is now Professor of Biology and Environmental Toxicology conducting research and teaching, and leading the development and management of larger interdisciplinary educational and research programs.
