Teaching
I am a developmental neurobiologist by training.  How the nervous system puts itself together during development, how it modifies itself throughout life, and how it repairs itself (or why it fails to do so) after injury ,during disease, and during normal aging are issues of great interest to me.  I try to explore these and related areas through my teaching.  My current teaching responsibilities include an introductory neurobiology course each fall for undergraduate (BIO 488) and graduate (ZO 588) students.  In the spring, I typically teach a seminar course on a neurobiological topic of interest, including BIO/ZO 518 Experience and the Brain, which is offered spring semester of odd-numbered years.  I have also begun co-teaching a summer course on NeuroEducation designed to meet 3 credit hours of the Interdisplinary Perspectives GEP requirement.

Administrative Responsibilities
I serve as Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Biology.  With over 2000 majors (in Zoology and in Biological Sciences), the Department of Biology is one of the largest undergraduate programs on campus.  Our courses serve an even larger number of NC State undergrads with an interest in the life sciences.  I invite you to visit the Biology Undergraduate home page to learn more about academics, advising, and research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in our department.

My community service work is focused primarily on a group called SWOOP -- Strong Women Organizing Outrageous Projects (www.SWOOP4u.org).  SWOOP started when a group of friends gathered to help each other and their neighbors clean up after Hurricane Fran hit this area in 1996.  Fifteen years later, SWOOPers still gather about once a month to build community amongst themselves while providing community service.  We complete single-day, heavy-lifting projects for people in need through our SWOOPin' Saturday workdays.  We also build wheelchair ramps for those who need them most but can least afford them through our new Ramp It Up! program.
