The Fourteenth Annual Student/Postdoc Symposium of the W. M. Keck Center for Behavioral Biology was a showcase of academic excellence, with 22 talks and a poster session.  "I know I say this every year, but this was the best symposium ever," said Keck Center Director, Robert Anholt.  Clint Penick received the award for best presentation for his talk on ant hierarchies.  Alison Ossip-Klein, visiting from Indiana University's Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior, received an honorable mention for her talk on rapidly evolving sexually dimorphic color patterns in lizards.

The poster session featured a range of undergraduate research projects.  Alyssa D'Addezio took home the top prize for her poster on the effects of bisphenol A on prosocial behavior and neuronal density in prairie voles.  By all accounts it was another outstanding day of science sponsored by the W. M. Keck Center for Behavioral Biology. (Dated: 03/20/2013)

Patisaul Study Published In The Journal PLOS ONE - How BPA Affects Gene Expression, Anxiety; Soy Mitigates Effects New research led by researchers at North Carolina State University shows that exposure to the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) early in life results in high levels of anxiety by causing significant gene expression changes in a specific region of the brain called the amygdala. The researchers also found that a soy-rich diet can mitigate these effects.

“Anxiogenic effects of developmental Bisphenol A exposure 1 are associated with gene expression changes in the juvenile rat amygdala and mitigated by soy

It is with sadness that we report that Dr. Tom Quay passed away in Raleigh on April 16, 2012 at the age of 97.  Dr. Quay earned his Master's Degree at NC State in 1940 and went on to earn the first Ph.D. awarded by the University.  Dr. Quay taught ornithology and other subjects in the Department of Zoology for over 30 years and remained a part of our departmental family after his retirement.  A memorial service will be held 2 PM on Friday (April 20) at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church.   The family has asked, in lieu of flowers, that gifts be made to Tom's NCSU endowment in his memory.

The Thomas L. Quay Wildlife and Natural Resources Undergraduate Experiential Learning Award provides support for undergraduate students in environmental sciences and natural resources curricula (in the Dept of Biology and in the Dept of Forestry and Natural Resources) who plan to participate in an experiential learning opportunity.  Recipients must display strong leadership potential, including extensive community or University service, as well as maintain a high level of academic achievement.
