The Department of Biology includes several faculty who provide their expertise to the community through the NC Cooperative Extension Service This is one way in which knowledge from the land-grant universities(NCSU and NC A and T) is made more accessible to the citizens of North Carolina. For information on extension in your area, contact your local county Cooperative Extension Center -- a complete list of centers can be found here.

The following members of our faculty serve as Extension Specialists and are actively engaged in Aquaculture and Fisheries and Pond Management Extension:

  • Dr. Jeff Buckel (marine fisheries management; home page)
  • Dr. Harry Daniels (warmwater aquaculture in eastern North Carolina; home page)
  • Dr. Jeff Hinshaw (coldwater and coolwater aquaculture and fisheries; e-mail; trout info page)
  • Dr. Jim Rice (pond and reservoir management; home page)

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Extension activities in the NCSU Department of Biology are fundamentally different from the majority of traditional extension programs. Fisheries Extension Specialists have more direct contact and interaction with state agencies such as the NC Division of Marine Fisheries and NC Wildlife Resources Commission. The Aquaculture Specialists work at the state and national levels with government agencies (NC Division of Water Quality, NC Marine Resources Commission, NC Department of Agriculture, EPA, and USDA) and also work directly with Area Aquaculture Agents and private producers.
