Low Doses of Bisphenol-A (BPA) Have Reproductive Health Effects
(June 2009)  Graduate student Heather Adewale and Dr. Heather Patisaul teamed up with researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to report that even low doses of bisphenol-A (BPA) can have effects on female reproductive function.  The studies exposed rats to a range of doses of BPA at a critical time in development and followed the animals through puberty and into adulthood, documenting effects on the time of onset of puberty and on the condition of the ovaries.  These findings add important information to the current debate regarding the potential health effects of BPA, which is a chemical found in a variety of products, including some baby bottles and water bottles.  The work was published in the journal Biology of Reproduction and is described more fully in this NC State News Release by Matt Shipman.

Phi Kappa Phi Emerging Scholar Awards
(May 2009)  The Emerging Scholar Award recognizes outstanding rising sophomores in all fields of study at NC State and other institutions with active Chapters of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.  Phi Kappa Phi is a national honor society established in 1897 to recognize and promote academic excellence in all disciplines of higher education. It is the oldest, largest, and most selective of all such honor societies. The NC State Chapter was founded in 1923.
