  Marcy Bullock
Director

My role at NC State
As the Director I manage the office and try to inspire everyone around me to reach their potential. I teach courses, and counsel students. I strive to keep our programs on the cutting edge. I am proud that our team has been recognized nationally for our innovative approach to helping students make sense of their options and reach their career goals.

My career path
My first job in high school was at KFC and I moved up to being a hostess at the Rusty Pelican while in
college. I knew I wanted to help people, so I worked at an Alcohol Treatment Center with inpatients
after I graduated with a Sociology degree. I quickly realized that I preferred working with motivated
college students, so after graduate school I went on to work at four university career centers from
California, to Australia, to my current home, North Carolina.

The rewards in my work
Touching students' lives and guiding them to reach their goals is very rewarding. When I hear alumni
tell me that I had a positive impact on the career choices they made I feel like I have been a success.
I get very pumped up when I see the growth that a student experiences from Freshman to Senior
year and I know that I had some influence on that process. I am passionate about teaching students
the value of finding a balance between their personal and professional life. We all seek happiness and
I love helping students explore what will light a fire in their belly when the alarm goes off on Monday
morning and it is time to begin a work week.

My words of wisdom to students

Be true to yourself! If you don't know your purpose in life, then your purpose is to find it. Use all the
resources available to you to help in this self discovery process, including, of course, CALS Career
Services!  If you plan ahead you will have a higher probability of finding a great job after you leave
NC State.

When I'm not on campus
I am usually on the soccer field either playing in the women's league or cheering on my two teenage
daughters. I also like to cook for my husband and sing Karaoke.

  Melissa Kahn
Career Advisor

My role at NC State
Assist students with exploring career options and finding a path that not only makes use of their
skills and strengths but also matches their interests and values. I also help students with job search
related issues and help them transition from college to the world of work.

My career path
Swim Lessons Instructor, Runner for a law firm, Administrative Assistant, Lifeguard & Swim Team
Coach, Receptionist, Financial Aid Assistant, Career Counselor

The rewards in my work
Seeing students find their passion and achieve their goals while learning about themselves and
gaining confidence in who they are and what they have to offer.

My words of wisdom to students
1. Try out as many different things as possible.
2. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
3. Start your career planning early.

When I'm not on campus
I’m cooking, reading or watching football.

  Jennifer Hartwell
Graduate Assistant

My role at NCSU
As the Graduate Assistant for CALS Career Services, I will spend the next academic year counseling students on career-related issues as well as helping the Career Services office with a variety of projects.  I am presently a second year student in the Counselor Education M.Ed. program, concentrating in College Counseling.  Additionally, I am a member of the NCSU Graduate Student Association and Chi Sigma Iota.

My career path
I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Cazenovia College in 2005.  As a student, I served in various leadership roles including Teaching Assistant; Peer Tutor/Mentor, President of the Human Rights Club, and Washburn Teaching Fellow.  After graduation, I accepted a position at the college as a Professional Tutor for students with disabilities.  I moved to North Carolina in 2006 and spent two years working at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill’s Law Library.  Although I loved working at the library, my passion is working directly with college students.  In order to continue my career in academia I learned I needed a Masters degree, which is what landed me here today.

The rewards in my work
I struggled when I first got to college.  I thrived, however, once I discovered my niche as a Peer Tutor/Mentor in the Learning Center at my undergraduate institution.  It was such a thrill to help students discover their potential and memories of this experience are what helped me set my professional goals.  I believe Career Services is a great place to find your own niche and passion in life, because it forces you to think beyond college. Being a part of this process is very rewarding.

My words of wisdom to students
1.     It’s never too early to write your resume
2.    The person you ultimately have to answer to is yourself – make that person someone you are proud of
3.    Leave yourself options
4.    Internships rock! I thought I was going to be an archivist, but changed my mind after spending three months cataloging memorabilia in a windowless basement.
5.    When you are thinking about where you want to work, make sure the organization’s values align with your own

When I’m not on campus
When not on campus, I enjoy baking bread, walking with my dog, camping and exploring the Triangle with friends and family.
