Dr. Fernandez is the leader of the Caneberry and Strawberry Breeding Programs. The primary focus of the caneberry program is to develop heat tolerant raspberry varieties that have a high chilling requirement. Her team has mapped heat tolerance, high chilling and primocane fruiting trait QTL’s in red raspberry. She also conducts research in sustainable strawberry breeding. That program focuses on development of strawberries with excellend horticltural traits and resistance to diseases. Dr. Fernandez, is a partner on several federal grants focused on caneberry and strawberry breeding and cultural studies.
