Ready, Set, Future

We are excited that you desire to earn a Master of Microbial Biotechnology degree from NC State University.

Before you begin the application process, note the following requirements for the MMB program at NC State:

  • All applicants must apply through The Graduate School
  • The MMB program offers fall admission only
  • Application deadlines: Deadline: May 1 for domestic studentsMarch 1 for international applicants
  • All MMB students must have taken an undergraduate microbiology course and an undergraduate biochemistry course and earned a B- or better. f you did not receive a "B-" or better you may be required to retake the course(s) prior to beginning the program. Prospective students who did not take one or both will be required to complete one or both courses prior to the start of the program. Applicants may apply to the program before completing any of the prerequisites, but you must finish and receive a grade of "B-" or higher before beginning the program.
  • Students must have a 3.0 or greater GPA. If your GPA is below a 3.0, you may be required to take one to three additional graduate-level courses before being considered for admission.

Application Package

 

**Due to COVID-19 the MMB application will not require a GRE score for fall 2021 applications**

The following items are required in your application package:

  1. Official transcripts from a four-year bachelor’s program. International applicants with a three-year degree must have their degree credentialed through an agency such as World Education Service or National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
  2. Official GRE scores. The Institutional Code for NC State University is 5496. (A departmental code is not required.) See more information about the GRE below.
  3. Official TOEFL or IELTS scores (for international students), no older than 24 months prior to the requested entry term. Note: These test scores are not required if you are a citizen of a country where English is the official language and the language of instruction in higher education, or have successfully completed at least one year of full-time study in a degree program at a four-year U.S. college or university.
  4. Three (3) letters of recommendation from professional references. Personal references will not be accepted.
  5. Personal statement. Please demonstrate (in about 2-3 pages) your understanding of the scope of the MMB program and clearly convey your background; what led you to choose the MMB program; your post-graduation goals; and how the program will help you accomplish your professional goals. You may discuss prior and current research experiences, but note that the Master of Microbial Biotechnology is not a research-oriented degree.

International Applicants

English Proficiency Requirements

All international applicants, regardless of citizenship, must demonstrate proficiency in English at a level necessary to be successful in a graduate program at NC State. Most applicants can meet this requirement one of the following ways:

1. Provide a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. The Graduate School requires at least an 80 on the Internet-based Test (iBT).

Note: The average iBT score for international students accepted into the MMB Program is 109. Test date must be no older than 24 months prior to the beginning of the requested entry term.

Minimum Test Scores for Each Section:
  • Listening: 18 points
  • Reading: 18 points
  • Writing: 18 points
  • Speaking: 18 points for admission to the Graduate School; 23 points for TA appointment where TA has direct verbal interactions with students; 26 points for TA appointment where TA presents lectures in the class or laboratory

2. Provide the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results with an overall band score of at least 6.5. (Note: The average band score for international students accepted into the MMB Program is 7.5+). Test date must be no older than 24 months prior to the beginning of the requested entry term.

Minimum Test Scores for Each Section:

  • Listening: 6.5
  • Reading: 6.5
  • Writing: 6.5
  • Speaking: 6.5 for admission to the Graduate School; 7.0 for a TA appointment 

3. Be a citizen of a country where English is an official language and the language of instruction in higher education.

4. Have successfully completed at least one year of full-time study in a degree program at a four-year U.S. College or university.

Submitting IELTS Scores

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) allows you to report your scores to up to five institutions free of charge at the time you take the test. Scores are available approximately two weeks after you take the test. At your IELTS Testing Center, request that your scores are sent to North Carolina State University, Raleigh - Graduate Admissions (any other abbreviated version of our name may result in an error message when you attempt to make the request). If you do not see your IELTS scores reported in your application, email graduate_applications@ncsu.edu with your Test Report Form (TRF) number from your score sheet.

The Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR)

Some international students who are academically admissible are required to submit a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR) and related financial documentation to show your ability to pay tuition and living expenses. After the department recommends your admission, you will receive an email regarding your updated admission decision, the decision letter and a link to the CFR form.

Note: Do not send a completed CFR form until we request it.

Three-Year Bachelor's Degree

  • The Graduate School only accepts three-year bachelor’s degrees from institutions within the Bologna Process. If the institution is not part of this organization, the applicant is required to provide the Graduate School with an evaluation of the transcript for the three-year degree by an international credential evaluation company.
  • We accept international credential evaluations from members of NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services). AICE (Association of International Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers). Others may be acceptable as well, but please check with the Graduate School if a question as to the appropriateness of the evaluation arises.
  • The requirement for an evaluation will be waived if the individual earned a master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
