FIELD ID CHARACTERISTICS:
Identification of Cyperus to species requires examination of fruits and mature achenes (containing a single seed).
Synonym(s): Cyperus virens var. arenicola
Description: A clumping, perennial, grass-like sedge with triangular stems. Can be fairly tall, 0.3 to 0.6 m in height.
Leaves: Basal, linear leaves, 1 cm or more wide
Flowers/Fruit: Spikelets flattened and rounded; densely packed. Inflorescences located at ends of stems, with flattened spikelets usually in pairs or groups. Seeds in a folded scale, unlike Carex.
Habit and Range: Sunny marshes, ditches, depressions. Found in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
