FIELD ID CHARACTERISTICS:

Identification of Juncus to species requires examination of mature seeds and fruits. All Juncus have 6 sepal-like structures surrounding each fruit.

Description: Dark green rush, forming dense clumps in brackish marshes. Upright, hollow, smooth, needle-like stems with very sharp tips. Grows 1 to 1.5 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves cylindrical, smooth, and stiff with sharp points at the tip. Dark green, sometimes appearing black from a distance. Turn grayish in winter.

Flowers/Fruit: Inflorescence is panicle of numerous small flowers in bunches connected to stalks; emerges from the side of the stem. Flowers and fruits May to October.

Habit and Range: Coastal brackish and fresh-tidal marshes, often in extensive colonies.
