FIELD ID CHARACTERISTICS:

Sheaths and leaf blades finely marked with parallel lines and contain small saw-like teeth on edges. Look also for hairy bands on stems.

Synonym(s): Homalocenchrus oryzoides, Phalaris oryzoides

Description: Medium to tall (1 to 1.5 m) perennial grass with weak, slender culms.

Leaves: Yellowish-green leaves, up to 1 cm wide and 20 cm long with saw-like teeth on the margins. Leaf blades and sheaths marked with fine parallel lines.

Flowers/Fruit: Terminal inflorescence loosely branching and spreading, 10 to 20 cm long. Elliptic spikelets on wavy or undulating branches of the panicle. Flowers and fruits July to October.

Habit and Range: Widespread statewide in wet areas, freshwater marshes, wet pastures and ditches. Tolerates slightly brackish waters.
